Sunday Morning: A Simple Delight

In our family, it is an unspoken tradition that on every Sunday morning before church starts, we always eat noodle for breakfast. When I say noodles, I meant those noodles cooked from street's stalls. This 'tradition' had started ever since I was very small, and everyday, the noodles I ate for breakfast came from different stalls, so Sunday morning's breakfast was never boring.

Through that tradition, both of my parents know many noodle stalls around Jakarta. At least that's what I think it is, since in a month, we always ate noodles from at least 3 different stalls. And it continues until now, which is good.

It had also made me into a noodle-maniac. Yep.

Since my church is located in Pluit, my parents found this particular gem (aka noodle stall) located not so far from our church. This particular stall is 'Mie Akong', with its big cloth banner 'glued' above the stall.

The stall, although small, provides enough tables and chairs for its cutomers. The tables are joined, so the staffs don't have to push the tables around if a table cannot contain a group (say, with more than 5 people). I've always come to this place with my family for Sunday breakfast, and it is always packed with hungry customers, waiting for their breakfasts, just like us. Even though the stall is not fully packed on some days, Mie Akong is never empty.

They offer variety of menu, and the top ones would be Mie Ayam and Mie Hong Kong. I ate the first one when we got to this place for the very first time, and the noodle is quick to join my list of 'unsatisfactory food'. Well, that's just me, I suppose.

I won't explain why I don't like it, but if you happen to go there, you might as well try it. Hopefully you agree with me as well, lol. :P

So off we went to the second choice, which is Mie Hong Kong. It still remains one of my favorite noodles, and it still is.

There is just something very special about the seasonings. On the first slurp of the noodle (without any soup added), the flavor is not overly too sweet, and enough saltiness to make it appetizing. The soup alone is not quite salty enough; quite bland, if I may say. However, when the soup is added to the noodle just enough, it creates a balanced harmony of that perfect bowl of a noodle. I don't really have the perfect words to describe it, but personally, it's like the soup or the noodle doesn't overpower the other.

They also provide the usual two types of chilies, and I usually go for the liquid one. Chili usually increases my appetite, and it's the perfect finish for this bowl of noodle. Chili is always good with everything, literally (except desserts. That's a big no).

It is always enjoyable to savor a bowl of noodle in this place. For me, noodles are a good way to fuel up my Sundays, and had become a must for every Sunday mornings.

Slurping down a bowl with iced tea as a companion, and I just sit there, enjoying every moment before the bowl is empty. Happy Sunday!
